mentoringThere is a high risk in simply going about one’s life without proper guidance from someone who has experience. Knowledge, working skills and street smarts can help you survive the daily grind. Gaining more out of your existence as a person and professional can give you better chances at genuine happiness and success. It is through mentoring by which you can gain the right tools and disposition to thoroughly plan ahead and make the right choices.

A mentor that supports you through the personal and professional circumstances of your life takes on a holistic approach. You end up being motivated and inspired through a fixed program that you can agree on. This is in the process of constantly monitoring on the progress that you make, given a time-bound duration.

What is a Mentor?

As compared to sprouting coaches around, mentors have a more unified approach in taking care of their mentees. This means individuals will have a more balanced way of improving themselves. Lifestyle or specialized coaches may help an individual in answering one area of his or her life, but does not necessarily help in fixing all other aspects of it.

Through trust and open dialogues, a mentor can significantly improve a person’s life, though in a gradual manner. This is done whilst maintaining privacy and confidentiality. To put simply, mentors are like therapists, coaches, and guidance counselors, all rolled into one. They do not simply tackle one aspect of a person’s life, but would be more concerned on the complete details of an individual’s lifestyle, down to the relevant attitudes and predispositions.

What a Mentor Exactly Does

Different personal and professional mentors have various approaches on handling their mentees. These integral aspects form part of Leadership Coaching. The following would be the main steps of a person’s program for improvement:

  • Getting to Know the Mentee

The mentor would take this step in a more open and safe environment. This means there will be no judgments rendered, only observations. Key lifestyle, interests, habits, and value points will be talked about, while the mentor ensures that the recipient of the program feels comfortable in opening up and sharing sentiments.

  • Identification of Points for Improvement

In the course of the sessions, the mentor would map out some key observations and major traits of the mentee. The program would then be moulded towards identifying some points that may be improved on by the client at every step of the way.

  • Lifestyle Assessment and Goal Setting

The point of this stage is for the mentor to ensure that there are still no judgement being rendered. More so, the client should know for himself of which lifestyle points he should improve on. There is a known belief that every individual has the ability to identify what is right from wrong. Along the process, an individual’s skills in personal and professional judgment would be molded for him to see the faults and triumphs behind his decisions.

After seeing what needs to be improved on and identifying the desired progress, a mentor would then guide a corresponding mentee on the improvement steps that have to be taken. The steps or self-improvement program will be done on a daily basis. The mentee is then assured that growth is close at hand.

There will be assessments for every step along the way, to ensure that the mentee takes charge and responsibility to improve the personal and professional aspects of his life. The mentioned basic steps ideally form into a cycle. Constant adjustments will be done, but individuals can also trust of the quality of life that he may live. This is given that he carries out his responsibilities on changing his lifestyle.

Complexities may be encountered along the way, most especially when a person reaches adulthood. Mentoring on a personal and professional level, through a holistic approach contributes to an one’s choice to improve one’s life. The mentoring process can be thorough and require higher levels of trust, but with the right methods, a person can attain a better disposition in making significant decisions in life.
